Aston Villa has reached an agreement with Chelsea for the transfer of winger Alejandro Garnacho. The deal is structured as a loan with a conditional obligation to buy, a condition that is considered easily achievable. This arrangement is understood to meet Chelsea‘s valuation for the player.
Reports indicate that Chelsea had sought a fee for the Argentina international winger. Garnacho, joined Chelsea last summer from Manchester United for £40 million. He had not reported for pre-season training at Chelsea, aiming to secure a move away from the club.
Transfer Details and Financial Regulations
The transfer comes after a significant deal between the two clubs, which saw Morgan Rogers move to Chelsea for a British-record fee of £117 million. The structure of Garnacho‘s deal is influenced by UEFA‘s financial sustainability regulations, as both clubs were recently fined for breaches. They are navigating a complex financial landscape to avoid further sanctions.
Villa‘s substantial profit from the sale of Morgan Rogers is crucial for complying with UEFA and Premier League financial constraints. However, the club also needs to rebuild its squad following multiple departures. Chelsea, currently under a four-year settlement agreement with UEFA, needs to generate profits from player trading.
The complexity arises because UEFA rules can deem two player transfers between the same clubs within 45 days and with similar payment obligations as a ‘player exchange transaction’. If the Garnacho and Rogers deals were considered a single transaction, Villa‘s profit from Rogers would be reduced by the net difference in fees, impacting their financial compliance.
To circumvent these rules, a loan with a conditional obligation to buy is often used. However, UEFA is tightening loopholes, stating that if a condition is ‘virtually certain’, the deal must be recognised as a permanent transfer from the outset of the loan. This means the deal for Garnacho needed to incorporate enough uncertainty to satisfy UEFA that a permanent move was not a foregone conclusion.
Unai Emery, Aston Villa‘s manager, is reportedly a keen admirer of Garnacho, having shown interest in him before his move to Chelsea. AS Roma had also expressed interest in signing Garnacho, but Villa believes they have convinced the player to join.
Garnacho’s Performance and Fit at Aston Villa
During his first season at Chelsea, Garnacho struggled to make a significant impact, particularly on the left wing. He played 1,217 Premier League minutes across 25 appearances last term, averaging less than 49 minutes per game. This is less than both Rogers (1,528 minutes) and Emiliano Buendia (1,527 minutes) managed in the same position for Villa last season.
His goal involvement rate was also lower, with five goal involvements averaging one every 243 minutes, compared to Rogers‘ record of one every 90 minutes and Buendia‘s every 190 minutes. If Garnacho joins Villa, it may necessitate a tactical adjustment to Unai Emery‘s system.
Garnacho tends to hug the touchline and stay wide, which differs from the versatility of players like Buendia and Rogers, who can play on either flank and move inside. While Garnacho has operated on the right-hand side previously, his preference for staying wide would require flexibility from Emery or adaptability from the player.
Former Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor has voiced opposition to the potential transfer, questioning Garnacho‘s ability and attitude. He cited Garnacho‘s performances at Chelsea, noting his difficulty in getting past full-backs and his tendency to pass back. Agbonlahor also raised concerns about Garnacho‘s character and potential impact on the dressing room harmony at Villa, referencing past behaviours at Manchester United.
Despite the criticism, Agbonlahor acknowledged that Unai Emery has a track record of revitalising players whose careers have stalled. Garnacho started just 22 matches in all competitions for Chelsea during the 2025-26 season, with 14 of those in the Premier League, scoring eight goals.
The deal is designed to benefit both clubs, with Chelsea believing the conditions for Garnacho‘s permanent move to Villa are ‘easily achievable’.
