Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden has agreed to a new four-year contract, ensuring his presence at the club until 2030. This extension comes as his previous agreement was set to conclude next summer. Foden will continue his career under the guidance of new head coach Enzo Maresca.
Foden, who was given his first-team debut by former manager Pep Guardiola at the age of 17, has accumulated 369 appearances for City. During his time with the club, he has been part of teams that secured six Premier League titles, one Champions League, and two FA Cups.
Foden’s journey and future
The midfielder expressed his enthusiasm for the new deal, stating that committing his future to City means everything to him and that playing for the club has always been his aspiration. He also acknowledged the privilege of being part of a historic period marked by numerous titles, while emphasizing the team’s continuous focus on future successes.
Foden also shared his anticipation of working with Maresca again. Maresca previously served as an assistant to Guardiola during City’s Treble-winning 2022-23 season, a period Foden described as brilliant, noting the respect and affection the players held for him.
Despite his past achievements, Foden experienced an inconsistent season, resulting in his exclusion from Thomas Tuchel’s England World Cup squad in May. He made only 23 Premier League starts during that period. The Professional Footballers’ Association suggested that Foden had been affected by a demanding fixture schedule, noting that his performance was not at the level seen two years prior.
In the season following City’s Treble win, Foden achieved a career-high of 27 goals and 12 assists. However, his output in the subsequent two campaigns saw a decrease, partly due to a change in his role within the team. Last season, he scored seven goals and provided five assists in 33 Premier League games, while the season before that, he registered seven goals and two assists in 28 top-flight matches.
Academy’s continued importance
Foden’s new contract is seen as a recognition of a homegrown talent and underscores the ongoing significance of the club’s academy. As City embarks on a new chapter under Maresca, the academy’s role remains central to the club’s strategy. Foden’s progression from the City Football Academy to a key first-team player serves as a prime example for the academy system.
His journey is not an isolated case, with other academy graduates like Oscar Bobb already making contributions at the first-team level. The emergence of Nico O’Reilly further highlights the talent being nurtured within City’s system. The club’s acquisition of young winger Jeremy Monga further demonstrates its commitment to identifying and developing future generations of players.
For Maresca, the pathway from the academy could become increasingly vital. While new managers introduce fresh ideas and tactical approaches, having players who are already familiar with the club’s standards offers a significant advantage. Although City will continue to invest in established international talent, the presence of players who have developed within the club provides the squad with a deeper understanding of what City represents, beyond just their individual abilities.
Foden’s new deal signifies a commitment to the club’s future and reinforces that the academy-to-first-team pathway remains a core strength for Manchester City.
