England’s World Cup Journey Continues
England is set to face DR Congo in the World Cup knockout stages, with the match scheduled for Wednesday in Atlanta. The team, managed by Thomas Tuchel, advanced after topping their group, but their performances have raised questions regarding squad balance and defensive stability. Despite being considered strong favourites for the upcoming clash, the path to the final could involve encounters with teams such as Mexico and Brazil or Argentina.
Tuchel was brought in by the English FA with the aim of guiding the team to a major tournament victory, especially after their appearances in the last two European Championship finals. However, the group stage matches have led some to believe that the team’s progress under Tuchel has not significantly surpassed their previous form under Gareth Southgate.
The team’s opening game in the 2026 tournament saw them secure a 4-2 victory over Croatia, a match where Tuchel’s attacking substitutions were noted. This was followed by a 0-0 draw against Ghana. England then managed a 2-0 win against Panama, a performance that was described as unconvincing, with moments of brilliance from Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane proving crucial.
Tuchel acknowledged the significant impact of Bellingham and Kane, who have collectively scored five goals. He stated, “That’s what we need. That’s what we want. That’s why we pick them. They make us dangerous. They make us a top team and that’s why our expectations are high.”
Defensive Challenges and Squad Selection
A notable concern for England has been the right-back position, which has become problematic due to injuries and selection decisions. The situation was exacerbated when Tino Livramento sustained an injury before England’s first match, and Tuchel opted not to call up another specialist right-back. Additionally, Reece James is expected to miss the match against DR Congo due to a hamstring strain.
In the game against Panama, Jarell Quansah, primarily a centre-back, started at right-back but had to be substituted due to an ankle twist. It is anticipated that Djed Spence will fill the role on Wednesday. These injury issues have brought attention to Tuchel’s decision to not include Trent Alexander-Arnold in the squad. Even after Livramento’s withdrawal, Trevoh Chalobah was called up instead, increasing the number of centre-backs in the squad to six.
Midfield options also present a challenge, with concerns surrounding Declan Rice highlighting a perceived lack of depth. While Jordan Henderson, at 36, is part of the squad for his leadership, this meant that Adam Wharton, who had an impressive season with Crystal Palace, was not included.
Tuchel remains confident in his team’s ability to improve throughout the tournament. He commented, “We believe we will get better, and we will… it is no problem putting the work in and growing into a tournament like this.” He further added, “It is important now that we keep believing, focusing on what we can influence and every game will be different.”
Upcoming Fixtures and Fan Dilemmas
The match against DR Congo will kick off at 12pm in Atlanta, which translates to 5pm UK time. Should England emerge victorious, their next fixture in the round of 16 will be against the winner of the match between co-hosts Mexico and Ecuador. That game is scheduled for Tuesday evening in Mexico City, starting at 2am UK time on Wednesday.
If England progresses, their round of 16 match will take place on Sunday evening in the Mexican capital. This means a 1am Monday morning kick-off for fans in the UK, potentially requiring them to stay up until around 3am to watch the entire game. However, if England advances to the later stages of the competition, such as a potential quarter-final clash, the kick-off times for UK fans are expected to be more favourable, with a potential quarter-final starting at 10pm UK time on July 11.

Tuchel has expressed his belief that the team will improve following their performances against Ghana and Panama. After the 2-0 win over Panama, he stated, “We know what we need to get better and we will get better.” He emphasized the importance of belief and focus, saying, “It is important now we keep believing, keep focusing on what we can influence.”
The manager also highlighted the varied nature of upcoming matches, noting, “Every game will be a different game. There are so many styles and cultures of football.” He concluded by stressing the need for bravery: “The most important thing is to not be afraid, be brave, courageous and go step by step. and we are ready for that.”
