FIFA investigates on-pitch brawl after Spain’s World Cup final victory over Argentina

FIFA has initiated an investigation into an on-pitch altercation that occurred between players from Argentina and Spain following the conclusion of their World Cup final match in New Jersey, United States. The incident unfolded after Spain secured a 1-0 victory, dethroning their South American counterparts. Football’s global governing body confirmed on Monday that its disciplinary committee is assessing match reports regarding the multi-player brawl, which marked a chaotic end to a tense match decided in extra time.

A statement from FIFA indicated that a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor has been appointed to investigate potential breaches of the FDC (FIFA Disciplinary Code) concerning the post-match incidents. The findings and results of this probe are expected to be shared once the investigation is complete. The celebrations for Spain, who claimed their second world title, were overshadowed by the melee, which appeared to stem from heightened tensions and angry exchanges between both teams and their staff throughout the game.

Upon the final whistle at the end of extra time, while some players from both sides reacted with celebration or heartbreak, several others became involved in a physical confrontation. A widely circulated video shows Spanish star Lamine Yamal kneeling in prayer as multiple fights erupted in the background, with Argentinian players reportedly engaging physically with their Spanish opponents. Argentina defender Leandro Paredes was observed shoving Spain‘s Eric Garcia by the throat. When Spanish substitute Gavi attempted to intervene, Paredes pushed him to the ground.

Argentina‘s coach, Lionel Scaloni, reportedly rushed to the scene to separate Paredes from the two players. However, Paredes then pushed more Spanish players before a teammate physically pulled him away. Despite the general animosity, some players from both teams did greet each other after the match, with a noticeable warm embrace between Yamal and Argentinian captain Lionel Messi. Nevertheless, the overall atmosphere between the two finalists remained bitter.

During the post-match ceremony, Spain‘s players formed a guard of honour and applauded the Argentinian players as they approached to receive their silver medals. However, Argentina did not reciprocate this gesture. Instead, they reportedly turned their backs on the newly crowned champions as Spain received their gold medals and the winners’ trophy.

The incident also involved Nicolás Otamendi, who confronted Rodri after the match. Otamendi reportedly told Rodri to “start talking less, idiot. You guys spent the whole week crying.” He further accused Rodri and Aymeric Laporte of complaining to referees throughout the week. Rodri, surprised by the outburst, questioned Otamendi about Laporte‘s comments. Otamendi‘s reaction was reportedly linked to remarks Laporte made before the final concerning Argentina‘s aggressive playing style.

Laporte had stated he was not concerned about physical play as long as it remained within the bounds of football and the referee performed their duties. He noted that in recent matches, certain situations had gone unpunished, particularly with Argentina, a team he described as leaving “little messages with its challenges.” Laporte emphasized that such actions should not be permitted in tournaments of this magnitude, as they can disrupt a player’s composure. He added that it is the referee’s responsibility to manage these situations to prevent the game from becoming chaotic.

This investigation follows another probe initiated by FIFA last week concerning Argentinian players’ display of a political banner after their World Cup semifinal victory over England. That incident involved defender Lisandro Martinez and unused substitute Giovani Lo Celso holding a banner that read “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” (The Falklands are Argentinian) during their celebrations. This action was deemed a violation of FIFA‘s stadium code of conduct and sparked controversy in the United Kingdom regarding the political sovereignty of the Falkland Islands. FIFA‘s independent disciplinary committee is currently assessing match reports and relevant circumstances for that incident before deciding on potential further steps based on the FIFA disciplinary code.

It remains unclear when FIFA‘s probe into the post-final altercation will conclude and whether any disciplinary actions will be taken against the players involved. FIFA has not yet provided an update on the investigation into the political banner incident.
