Alonso begins first day at Cobham as new Chelsea manager

Xabi Alonso officially began his tenure as the new manager of Chelsea on Thursday, reporting for his first day at the club’s Cobham training ground. His appointment was finalised earlier in the summer, concluding a period of speculation regarding the managerial position at Stamford Bridge. This day marked the initial opportunity for Alonso to work with some members of his squad.

Upon his arrival, Alonso signed in and met with players who were not involved in World Cup duties or on holiday after their tournament exits. Among the players present were Robert Sanchez, Levi Colwill, Joao Pedro, and Cole Palmer. Palmer notably brought along his new branded range of ice cubes.

New Manager’s Outlook and Challenges

Speaking to club media on his first day, Alonso expressed his enthusiasm for the new role. He described it as a “big honour” to be part of Chelsea, acknowledging it as a significant club globally over recent decades. He also highlighted the “nice challenges” ahead, viewing them as an exciting aspect of the current moment.

Alonso indicated that the timing of his move to Chelsea was opportune for all parties involved. He believes that the potential and opportunity presented by the club were the right fit for him. The prospect of working with the team and squad, developing a footballing philosophy, generating excitement at the stadium, and connecting with the fanbase were key motivators for him.

Having previously experienced Stamford Bridge as an opposing player, Alonso is familiar with the energy of the stadium. He emphasised the importance of fostering that energy and connection with all stakeholders of the club.

Squad Management and Strategic Approach

Alonso’s arrival follows Chelsea‘s 10th-place finish in the Premier League, which meant the club did not secure European football for the upcoming 2026-27 season. This situation, while disappointing for the club, offers Alonso more time on the training pitch, which is seen as crucial for a return to the top five in the Premier League.

There are suggestions that Alonso might adopt a squad management approach similar to that of Antonio Conte during the 2016-17 season, another period when Chelsea was without continental competition. During Conte’s successful Premier League-winning campaign, he relied on a streamlined squad, with 10 players making at least 29 starts and only 14 featuring on 20 or more occasions in the league.

Alonso’s previous managerial record with Bayer Leverkusen supports this potential strategy. In their unbeaten Bundesliga title-winning campaign of 2023-24, he utilised 24 different players across the season, with 18 featuring in 20 or more matches, even while managing European commitments. In the 2024-25 season, despite the added pressure of Champions League football, he used just 23 players in the Bundesliga, with 18 playing 15 or more times.

This contrasts with Chelsea‘s 2025-26 season, where the starting lineup frequently changed, and only 11 players made at least 15 Premier League starts. A total of 30 different players were used across the 38-game league campaign. With over 30 players currently in the senior ranks, including those returning from loans, reports suggest Alonso may undertake a significant squad reduction to achieve his preferred numbers.

The club’s fanbase and ownership, BlueCo, consider a return to the top five of the Premier League as a minimum expectation for the upcoming season, underscoring the importance of Alonso’s strategic decisions.
