MI New York secures win
MI New York secured a six-wicket victory over the Los Angeles Knight Riders in Pomona on Saturday, July 5, 2026. The chase was completed with a single ball remaining, largely due to an unbeaten partnership between Kieron Pollard and Corey Anderson. Pollard was named player-of-the-match for his performance.
The Knight Riders had set a target of 166 runs after batting first, posting 165 for 6. This total was considered about par on a pitch that offered some assistance to bowlers. During the halfway point of MI New York’s reply, the required run rate had increased, and the Knight Riders had taken more wickets than their opponents would have preferred.
Kieron Pollard’s unbeaten 63 runs were crucial in guiding his team to victory. His innings reminded many of his consistent ability as a finisher in the format. The match was part of the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2026 season, a league known for its competitive matches and diverse rosters.
Key partnership turns the tide
The momentum of the match shifted significantly with an unbroken 88-run stand between Pollard and Anderson. This partnership developed over just 48 balls. Anderson contributed 37 not out, focusing on rotating the strike and finding gaps, while Pollard took on the responsibility of hitting boundaries.
A notable aspect of their partnership was their careful approach against Sunil Narine, the Knight Riders’ spinner. Narine has historically been a challenging bowler for MI New York in previous run chases. Both batsmen appeared determined to deny him a wicket, and Narine completed his full bowling allocation without claiming any wickets, which indicated MI New York’s strategic planning for the chase.
After successfully navigating Narine’s overs, Pollard then targeted the remaining bowlers, leading to a rapid reduction in the required runs. Anderson ultimately sealed the win in the final over, hitting a six over long-on to bring the score to 168 for 4, with one ball still remaining. This composed finish followed a middle phase of the chase that had been somewhat uncertain.
Knight Riders’ performance and league implications
The Los Angeles Knight Riders may feel they could have scored more runs. Matthew Tromp was their top scorer with 44 runs, and other batsmen made starts, but none managed to convert these into a larger innings that could have pushed their total closer to 185 runs, which might have been more defensible. Carmi le Roux was the most effective bowler for the Knight Riders, taking 2 wickets for 39 runs, and Jason Holder also contributed to keeping the scoring tight towards the end of the innings.
This defeat continues a challenging trend for the Knight Riders, who have reportedly struggled with batting depth despite the perceived strength of their squad on paper. For MI New York, this victory is seen as a stabilising result for their campaign, highlighting the importance of experienced players who can remain calm under pressure during difficult chases.
The MLC 2026 season still has many matches to be played, and both teams are expected to face tougher opposition as the playoff picture begins to take shape. However, this match demonstrated MI New York’s capability to win games from challenging positions, a valuable asset in a compact tournament format.
The match was played at the Knight Riders Cricket Field in Pomona, United States, on July 5, 2026.
