Russell on Red Bull’s High-Speed Advantage
George Russell has identified Red Bull‘s proficiency in high-speed corners as a significant strength, particularly as the British Grand Prix approaches. This observation follows his recent victory over Max Verstappen at the Austrian Grand Prix, where he won by a narrow margin. Russell noted that Red Bull has historically performed well in such conditions, a trend that continued in Austria.
Russell also commented on Ferrari‘s performance in Austria, suggesting they faced power unit overheating issues, which might have prevented them from showcasing their full potential. He believes that several drivers are consistently in contention for wins, highlighting the competitive nature of recent races. He mentioned Lando Norris‘s potential win in Miami, Lewis Hamilton‘s victory in Barcelona, and Max Verstappen‘s close challenge in Austria as examples of this tight competition.
During media day for the British Grand Prix, Max Verstappen also addressed the yellow flag incident from the Austrian Grand Prix qualifying. He questioned why only a single yellow flag was initially shown after his crash at Turn 9, which allowed Russell to complete his pole-position lap by lifting off the throttle. Verstappen stated that he would have attempted the same maneuver, but emphasized that the regulations should prevent such a situation from occurring.
Understanding the Mercedes W17
George Russell is optimistic about the upcoming race at Silverstone, despite acknowledging that he is still working to fully comprehend the characteristics of his Mercedes W17 car. His recent win in Austria concluded a challenging period that included a retirement in Canada and a weekend without points in Monaco. This victory has boosted his position in the championship standings.

Russell explained that his confidence in his own abilities remains strong, but his current focus is on consistently finding the optimal setup for the car across different circuits. He noted that his understanding of the car and tyres was more complete in the previous year compared to the current season, though he feels this understanding is improving with each race.
The progress made in Austria was particularly meaningful for Russell, as the circuit and conditions there have historically presented difficulties for him. He described Austria as a track where he typically struggles due to heat and low grip. However, his performance in the recent race was significantly better than it would have been earlier in the season, indicating positive developments in the car’s setup.
Russell believes that the past few weeks have provided him with substantial insights into the necessary adjustments for both the car’s configuration and his driving technique. These changes yielded immediate positive results in Austria, and he hopes they will establish a stronger foundation for the remainder of the season. He views his victory as a significant step forward, providing a base from which to build further.
While racing in front of a home crowd at Silverstone brings added excitement, Russell intends to maintain his usual focus, treating the event with the same professional approach as any other race on the calendar. He aims to achieve a victory at his home grand prix but is not allowing the occasion to create additional pressure or alter his mindset for the race weekend.
Russell stated that he attended his first Formula 1 race at Silverstone when he was ten years old, making it a particularly special venue for him.
Looking Ahead to Silverstone
The team’s efforts to refine the W17 in line with Russell’s evolving approach could present another opportunity at Silverstone to further reduce the championship gap and validate their recent advancements. Russell’s objective for the race in Great Britain is to achieve the fastest possible performance.
The British Grand Prix is scheduled to take place this weekend.
