Egypt secures historic knockout stage victory
Egypt has made history by securing its first-ever World Cup knockout stage victory, defeating Australia 4-2 in a penalty shootout after the match ended 1-1 following extra time. The thrilling Round of 32 encounter saw both teams battle fiercely, with the outcome decided by spot kicks at Dallas Stadium.
The match began with Emam Ashour putting Egypt ahead early in the game. However, Australia managed to level the score in the second half with an own goal, pushing the contest into extra time. Despite opportunities for both sides, neither team could find a winning goal during the additional 30 minutes, leading to the decisive penalty shootout.
During extra time, the defenses were particularly strong, with a total of 14 blocked shots recorded—eight by Australia and six by Egypt. In a strategic move anticipating penalties, Socceroos manager Tony Popovic substituted goalkeeper Patrick Beach for Mathew Ryan in the 119th minute.
Penalty shootout drama and player reactions
The penalty shootout saw Egypt convert four of their spot kicks, while Australia only managed two. Abdelmaguid scored the winning penalty for Egypt, sending the ball into the bottom left corner. Mohamed Salah, the Egyptian captain, also scored with a ‘Panenka’ penalty, a move he described as a way to instill confidence in his team.
Following the victory, Salah was visibly emotional, shedding tears during a pitchside interview. He expressed the historical significance of the win, stating, “It is history… I told the boys before the game, guys, this is the biggest game you could play in your life, so just enjoy it… don’t let the pressure get to you and not enjoy the moment.”
For Australia, the loss was a difficult pill to swallow. Jackson Irvine, who scored in the shootout, spoke to SBS, congratulating Egypt on their historic day and acknowledging the cruel nature of losing on penalties. He also highlighted the resilience of the Australian squad, particularly the younger players, who he believes will benefit from the experience.
Popovic also shared his thoughts with SBS, expressing his devastation for his team but also his pride in their performance. He noted that bringing on Mathew Ryan for the shootout was an option they had considered due to his experience, stating, “it was always an option for us with his experience.”
Looking ahead to the Round of 16
With this victory, Egypt advances to the Round of 16, marking their first appearance at this stage since the 1934 World Cup, where they were defeated by Hungary. This achievement comes 92 years after their previous opportunity.
Egypt will now face the winner of the match between Argentina and Cape Verde. The Argentina versus Cape Verde fixture is another highly anticipated game, with Argentina, the reigning world champions, led by Golden Boot contender Lionel Messi.
The Round of 32 has been marked by upsets, penalty shootouts, and late winners, setting a dramatic tone for the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup. Egypt’s triumph adds to this narrative, securing their place in the next phase of the tournament.
The Socceroos, despite their exit, will now turn their attention to future competitions, including a significant Asian Cup scheduled in six months’ time.
