USA Prepares for Knockout Stage Challenge
The United States men’s national team is set to face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the World Cup‘s round of 32. This crucial match will take place at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium. The American side, under the management of Mauricio Pochettino, has progressed through the tournament with relative ease thus far. However, they anticipate a more challenging encounter against a resilient Bosnian team known for its defensive approach.
Pochettino’s strategy to rest key players during the final group stage match against Turkey is expected to benefit the team. This decision aimed to maintain the intensity of their play for the knockout rounds. The team will need to break down a Bosnian defense that is likely to sit deep and focus on limiting space.
Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Defensive Strategy
Bosnia and Herzegovina is expected to adopt a cautious, defensive strategy, similar to what the USA encountered against Paraguay earlier in the tournament. Their approach will likely involve a mid-block, defending higher up the field while still maintaining compactness. This tactical setup aims to prevent the USA from easily penetrating their defense and creating scoring opportunities.
The Bosnian team earned their spot in this World Cup by winning consecutive penalty shootouts against Wales and Italy. Their ability to embrace a challenging game and play for set pieces suggests they will aim to make the match difficult for the co-hosts. They had the third-fewest entries into the opponent’s 18-yard box among teams that advanced to the round of 32, indicating their defensive focus.
Despite their defensive orientation, Bosnia and Herzegovina possesses players capable of making an impact on the attack. Esmir Bajraktarević, described as a quality player with strong ball control and one-on-one ability, can create game-changing passes. At the age of 21, he has already achieved success with his club, PSV Eindhoven, winning two consecutive Dutch league titles.
Another notable player for Bosnia and Herzegovina is Edin Džeko. The striker, at 40 years old, is a consistent threat in the opposition’s box and is known for scoring important goals when needed, even if he may not start the match.

USA’s Attacking Approach and Key Players
The USA is expected to be on the front foot, aiming to find an early goal against Bosnia and Herzegovina‘s defensive setup. Scoring early is considered crucial to dictate the pace of the game. The American team has demonstrated an aggressive mentality throughout the tournament, effectively pressing opponents and winning the ball higher up the field, which allows them to control play.
This aggressive strategy, however, may be adjusted for different opponents. The USA has not yet faced a possession-oriented team in the tournament, a scenario that could arise if they advance to the round of 16 and potentially play against Belgium.
Among the key players for the USA, Christian Pulisic is expected to be vital. The Milan winger recently returned from injury against Turkey and could be in line for a starting position in this match. His direct running and one-on-one skills are seen as critical assets for breaking down the Bosnian defense.

In the midfield, Weston McKennie has been a consistent positive force for the USA. His versatility allows him to fulfill various team needs, making him a valuable asset. Against Paraguay, he made significant runs into attacking channels, creating mismatches and overloading wings, often looking for scoring opportunities within the box. His movement and running have been important contributions to the team’s performance.
The match between the USA and Bosnia and Herzegovina is scheduled to kick off at 8 PM ET.
