Narges Mohammadi’s health deteriorates in prison, leading to urgent hospitalization

Narges Mohammadi has been hospitalized due to a severe decline in her health. This incident occurred on May 1, 2026, after she suffered two episodes of complete loss of consciousness and a severe cardiac crisis.

Mohammadi, aged 53, was arrested on December 12, 2025, in Mashhad. She received a sentence of more than seven years in prison for various charges, including six years for ‘gathering and collusion to commit crimes’.

Her family alleges that she faced physical abuse during her arrest. Supporters had warned about her deteriorating health for months prior to her hospitalization.

The Nobel Committee condemned the “ongoing life-threatening mistreatment” of Mohammadi earlier this year. Doctors have stated that her condition is critical and cannot be managed within the prison system.

Key facts:

  • Narges Mohammadi won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for her rights campaigning.
  • She previously served a sentence of 13 years and nine months before her arrest.
  • Mohammadi was granted temporary release in late 2024 due to medical concerns.

The Narges Mohammadi Foundation stated that her transfer was an “unavoidable necessity” following doctors’ assessments. However, her family described the move as a “last-minute action” that could prove too late.

Mostafa Nili, a neurologist involved in her care, emphasized that addressing her neurological state is currently the clinical priority despite serious cardiac issues. The Iranian government’s treatment of political prisoners continues to raise significant concerns among human rights activists worldwide.
