England’s World Cup hopes dashed

England’s aspirations of reaching a World Cup final were brought to an end following their semi-final match against Argentina. The team, under manager Thomas Tuchel, was leading by one goal when the game entered its final stages. However, Argentina managed to score two late goals, securing their spot in the final.

The match saw England take the lead in the 55th minute through Anthony Gordon. Following this goal, the team adopted a more defensive approach, which has since drawn criticism. Argentina’s Enzo Fernandez equalised in the 85th minute, and Lautaro Martinez scored the winning goal in the 92nd minute, both assisted by Lionel Messi.

Former England captain Wayne Rooney commented on the team’s performance, stating, “We have crumbled.” He attributed this to the manager’s decisions, describing the approach as “too passive.” Rooney emphasised that such tactics would not succeed against a team of Argentina’s calibre, calling it the “biggest test” that England had failed.

Tactical decisions under scrutiny

The tactical choices made by Thomas Tuchel after England took the lead have become a central point of discussion. Many expected England to press for a second goal, but instead, the team made defensive substitutions. Ezri Konsa was brought on for Anthony Gordon, shifting England to a back five. Further defensive changes included the introduction of defenders Dan Burn and Nico O’Reilly.

Chris Sutton, a former Premier League winner, criticised Tuchel’s strategy, noting that England “basically handed Argentina the initiative.” He argued that defending for an extended period against a team with Argentina’s quality was unsustainable. Sutton questioned Tuchel’s future leadership, asking, “how can you trust Thomas Tuchel to take this team forward?”

England captain Harry Kane also reflected on the team’s approach. He expressed disappointment, highlighting the effort put in by the squad. Kane noted that after their goal, Argentina mounted “wave after wave” of attacks, which England ultimately could not withstand.

Former England goalkeeper Joe Hart drew parallels to past criticisms of managers who “shut up shop” after taking the lead in significant matches. He observed a lack of panic from the Argentina side, contrasting it with the composure shown by Lionel Messi and his teammates as they exploited spaces.

Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez acknowledged the shift in momentum after England’s goal, stating that England changed their game plan by bringing on extra defenders. He suggested that sometimes, when leading, a team needs to continue pushing forward.

Messi’s decisive impact

Lionel Messi’s influence on the game was undeniable, particularly in the later stages. Despite England’s efforts to contain him, Messi played a crucial role in both of Argentina’s late goals. His ability to create opportunities and dictate play became increasingly evident as the match progressed.

After England took the lead, Messi began to exert more control, drawing in defenders and creating space. His cross for Lautaro Martinez’s winning goal was described as perfectly placed, allowing Martinez to head the ball past Jordan Pickford. This moment sealed Argentina’s victory and their progression to the final.

The match highlighted Messi’s enduring impact on major tournaments. He is now set to appear in his third World Cup final. His performance against England underscored his capacity to influence games, even when not at his most active for the entire match, by finding key moments to apply his skill.

Despite the criticism, Thomas Tuchel defended his decisions in the post-match news conference. He stated that he had “no regrets” and believed the team gave everything. Tuchel highlighted the team’s strong mentality throughout the tournament, overcoming various challenges including playing strong teams, extensive travel, and difficult conditions. He concluded that it was not the moment for a full tournament analysis.

Former England defender Micah Richards, while expressing admiration for Tuchel’s bravery, acknowledged that the manager “got it wrong” on this significant occasion and would need to accept that. Argentina will now face Spain in the final at New York New Jersey Stadium.
