Intercontinental ballistic missile: Türkiye unveils Yıldırımhan

Türkiye unveiled its first intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) named Yıldırımhan at the SAHA 2026 exhibition in Istanbul on May 5, 2026. This development represents a significant leap in Türkiye’s long-range strike capabilities.

The Yıldırımhan boasts an impressive range of 6,000 kilometers (3,728 miles) and can reach speeds between Mach 9 and Mach 25. It is powered by four rocket propulsion engines and utilizes liquid nitrogen tetroxide as fuel.

This unveiling marks a pivotal moment for Türkiye’s defense industry. The National Defense Ministry developed the missile through its R&D Center. It is among the most advanced missile platforms created by Türkiye to date.

The SAHA 2026 exhibition serves as a platform for defense and aerospace firms from Türkiye and abroad to showcase innovations. The Turkish defense industry has expanded its production capacity significantly through recent investments.

Experts note that while reaching this milestone is commendable, evolving technology necessitates continuous innovation. Yasar Guler emphasized that diverse needs require ongoing self-renewal in defense technologies.

Yıldırımhan’s payload capacity is 3,000 kg, allowing it to carry substantial munitions for long-range missions. This capability enhances Türkiye’s strategic deterrence posture in an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape.

The unveiling of the Yıldırımhan ICBM highlights Türkiye’s commitment to advancing its military technology. Officials have not disclosed whether further tests or operational timelines are planned following this announcement.
