A suspected hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius has resulted in three deaths, raising concerns about public health safety. The incident occurred while the cruise ship was located off the coast of Cape Verde.
The first victim was a 70-year-old man who died onboard. His wife collapsed at an airport in South Africa and later died in a hospital. At least one case of hantavirus infection has been confirmed among those affected.
As of midday, three other passengers have fallen ill due to the suspected outbreak. Around 150 passengers were onboard the MV Hondius at the time of the incident. The ship had departed from Argentina three weeks prior to the outbreak.

The World Health Organization (WHO) stated, “WHO is aware of and supporting a public health event involving a cruise vessel sailing in the Atlantic Ocean.” Hans Kluge, WHO’s Regional Director for Europe, added, “There is no need for panic or travel restrictions.” Local health authorities have visited the vessel to assess the condition of symptomatic individuals.
