North Berwick’s Renaissance Club hosts Genesis Scottish Open with ambitious sustainability programme

By Bilal Ahmed

The Genesis Scottish Open at Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland, is implementing an ambitious hydrogen and solar power programme, aiming to be one of the most sustainable golf tournaments staged. Significant sections of the tournament site are being powered by green hydrogen, which produces zero emissions. Additionally, the Fan Village’s main stage and merchandise shop are utilising solar power.

The primary hydrogen compound is situated between the first and 15th holes, featuring two 250kWh hydrogen power units (HPUs) that include an integrated Battery Energy Storage System. These HPUs, supported by funding from the Scottish Government, are supplying power to key hospitality and merchandise store infrastructure on the 15th hole, such as big screens and the Genesis Public Lounge. The entire broadcast compound, located by the 13th hole, is also powered by an HPU. This marks the seventh instance of a broadcast compound at a DP World Tour event being entirely powered by green hydrogen, with the initial deployment occurring at the 2023 BMW PGA Championship, a world first for sport.

GeoPura, a United Kingdom-based clean energy company, is supplying the hydrogen power cells. A subsidiary of Aggreko, Film and TV Services (FTVS), is responsible for the installation and management of the HPUs. These hydrogen power units are estimated to save over 16,200 kg CO₂e compared to traditional diesel generators. A predicted reduction of 600 kg CO₂e from energy generation is also expected when compared to the 2025 tournament. The HPUs generate low-carbon electricity using green hydrogen derived from renewable energy sources, producing no carbon dioxide or particulate emissions at the point of power generation, with water as the sole by-product.

Beyond hydrogen, the tournament is also incorporating solar power to provide electricity for the main stage and the Fan Village merchandise shop. While solar power has become more common in DP World Tour events, this is its first application at the Genesis Scottish Open. The event is also expanding its use of mains electricity. In 2025, 872.377 kWh of mains electricity was used, and this amount is set to increase in 2026 as grid connections are extended to cover the broadcast compound and the 13th green bar and catering area, further reducing reliance on temporary generators.

Sustainability Initiatives and Community Engagement

These sustainability efforts are part of the DP World Tour’s Golf for Good programme, specifically its Green Drive initiative, which aims to reduce operational and event greenhouse gas emissions and move the Tour towards net zero carbon. The Golf for Good programme at the Genesis Scottish Open also highlights the importance of nature, a focus that the DP World Tour is uniquely positioned to promote due to the diverse landscapes visited globally each season.

Fans can engage with wildlife in the Fan Village through a collaboration with Zoolab, offering educational workshops and ethical encounters with various animals, including snakes, frogs, and tortoises. A Little Links Nature Trail is also available across the course, allowing fans to learn about and enjoy the diverse flora and fauna at Renaissance Club. A Sustainability Symposium was held on Wednesday, delivered in partnership with VisitScotland, Scottish Golf, East Lothian Council, and GEO Sustainable Golf Foundation, bringing together golf clubs, industry, and government partners.

Maria Grandinetti-Milton, Director of Sustainability at the European Tour Group, commented on these initiatives, stating that hydrogen power has been experimented with at their events for four years. She noted that this is their most ambitious roll-out yet, marking the first time hydrogen has been used at this scale to power a major sporting event on a greenfield site. She emphasised that achieving net zero involves embracing new technologies and making incremental gains annually, expressing excitement for the project and the opportunity to share learnings with other venues.

Rob Dickson, VisitScotland Director of Industry and Events, highlighted that the Genesis Scottish Open serves as a strong example of how major events can lead in climate-conscious innovation. He noted its use of renewable energy to reduce environmental impact while showcasing innovation on a global stage, underscoring the increasing importance of sustainability for the tourism and events sector in protecting Scotland’s landscapes and natural assets.

Prediction Market Activity for the Scottish Open

Ahead of the Genesis Scottish Open, which concludes on Sunday, July 12th, a verified Kalshi referral code is active. The code MASSLIVE1 provides a $10 trading bonus for new Kalshi users who deposit $10 upon signing up. This offers prediction market traders a quick entry into Kalshi’s golf markets. The bonus is credited immediately upon deposit and can be used on any open Kalshi market, including active golf odds for the Scottish Open.

Kalshi operates as a federally regulated prediction market exchange in the United States, overseen by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). Unlike traditional sportsbooks, Kalshi functions as an exchange where traders post limit orders, and trades are executed when buyers and sellers are matched on an event outcome. Kalshi odds are presented as contract prices, typically in cents on the dollar, indicating a market-implied probability. These odds update in real time based on trader reactions to news and market sentiment. The platform’s golf markets for the Scottish Open are among its most actively traded.

The Kalshi sign-up bonus, offered through its referral programme, is a key user acquisition tool, effectively doubling a new user’s initial capital with a $10 bonus on a $10 deposit. This bonus is linked to verified Kalshi referral codes distributed via its affiliate publisher network. As of Thursday, July 9th, 2026, MASSLIVE1 is one of five verified codes, all offering the same $10 bonus on a $10 deposit.
