England’s World Cup Campaign Nears End
Following their defeat to Argentina in the World Cup 2026 semi-finals, England manager Thomas Tuchel has addressed his squad, urging them to conclude the tournament strongly. The team returned to their base in Kansas City after the semi-final loss and are preparing for two final training sessions ahead of Saturday’s bronze-medal match against France.
Sources indicate that Tuchel encouraged his players to move past their disappointment and aim for a high finish in the tournament. Should England secure third place by defeating France in Miami, it would mark their best men’s World Cup performance since their victory in 1966.
Tuchel reportedly expressed his pride in the team’s efforts in North America, as the Three Lions reached a World Cup semi-final for only the fourth time in their history. The relationship between the German coach and his players has become a notable point of discussion following Argentina’s 2-1 victory, which saw two late goals decide the match.
Tactical Decisions Under Scrutiny
Reports emerged that some key players were left disappointed by the team’s instructions in the latter stages of the game against Argentina. After Anthony Gordon gave England the lead, Tuchel reverted to a back five and made several defensive substitutions. This tactical shift occurred as Lionel Messi led Argentina’s comeback, assisting goals for Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez’s 92nd-minute winner.
Tuchel, however, has appeared to dispute the notion that the defensive retreat was a direct result of his instructions. He stated that dropping deeper was never the plan and suggested it might not be in the team’s “DNA” to control the game and possession in such circumstances. Between Gordon’s opening goal and Martinez’s winner, England reportedly had just 12 per cent possession.
Some players, including senior members of the squad, were reportedly confused by Tuchel’s defensive substitutions, believing they hindered rather than improved their chances of winning. They felt the changes made it difficult for England’s defense to get relief and maintain possession. The team’s attacking strategy throughout the tournament had focused on using fast wingers, with Argentina’s full-backs identified as a potential weakness. Despite this, players like Noni Madueke, Bukayo Saka, and Eberechi Eze remained on the bench after Gordon’s goal.
Tuchel’s decision to bring on Ezri Konsa for Gordon and switch to a back five with over half an hour remaining, followed by replacing Declan Rice with Nico O’Reilly, meant England had six defenders on the pitch. Harry Kane also dropped deeper to aid in defense against repeated Argentine attacks spearheaded by Messi.

Former England goalkeeper Joe Hart drew comparisons to previous managerial approaches, suggesting that little had changed in England’s tendency to protect a lead rather than seek a second goal. Tuchel defended his decisions, arguing that the problems originated before any substitutions were made and that the shift to a back five aimed to reduce crosses into the box and limit Argentina’s space.
Looking Ahead to Euro 2028
Despite the criticism regarding his tactical approach, Tuchel is understood to retain the support of the Football Association. He is expected to continue leading the team into the 2028 European Championship, which will be co-hosted by England, Wales, Scotland, and the Republic of Ireland. Tuchel signed a two-year contract extension in February, having initially been appointed in January 2025 with a mandate to win the 2026 World Cup.
There is no indication of a rift within the England camp or any animosity towards Tuchel, who is described as a popular and authoritative leader. Tuchel has also stated his 100 per cent commitment to his role for Euro 2028.
