Ecuador achieved a significant milestone by securing a place in the World Cup 2026 knockout stages for only the second time in their history, following a 2-1 comeback victory against Germany in New Jersey. The win marked a dramatic turnaround for the South American side, who had not scored in their initial two group stage matches.
The match saw an early lead for Germany, with Leroy Sane scoring within the first two minutes. However, Ecuador responded quickly as Nilson Angulo leveled the score just seven minutes later. The decisive goal came in the 77th minute from Gonzalo Plata, whose late winner ensured Ecuador advanced as one of the best third-placed teams.
Beccacece’s future secured
The victory was particularly impactful for Ecuador head coach Sebastian Beccacece. Prior to the match, the Argentine tactician had indicated he would step down if his team failed to progress to the knockout stages. Reports had also emerged of a verbal confrontation between his family members and supporters after a goalless draw against Curacao.
Following the win, Beccacece celebrated with his family, reflecting on an emotional moment that secured his position. Former England captain Alan Shearer commented that Beccacece deserved the outcome, noting the fighting spirit displayed by his players. Beccacece himself stated, “We have our feet grounded on earth and we feel and think in the right manner.”
Ecuador’s World Cup journey began with a three-point deduction in 2022 due to the ineligibility of Byron Castillo. They started the 2026 qualifiers under Felix Sanchez, who was dismissed in July 2024 after a Copa America quarter-final defeat. Beccacece’s tenure began with a 1-0 loss to Brazil, but his team then went on an 11-match unbeaten run, qualifying for the World Cup as runners-up in South America.

Despite arriving at the tournament with high expectations and a 19-game unbeaten streak, Ecuador faced a challenging start. A 1-0 defeat to Ivory Coast in their opener was followed by a goalless draw with debutants Curacao, which led to fan discontent. Beccacece acknowledged the disconnect with some supporters, saying, “I am very sorry I didn’t make it to the heart of the Ecuadorean fan.”
Historical context and team strength
This is Ecuador’s fifth appearance in the World Cup, having first qualified in 2002. Their only previous progression past the group stage was in 2006, where they were eliminated by England in the last 16. The current squad features notable players such as Paris St-Germain’s Willian Pacho and Arsenal’s Piero Hincapie in defense, Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo in midfield, and the experienced Enner Valencia, who has six career World Cup goals.

South American football expert Tim Vickery highlighted the significance of this achievement, suggesting it could be the greatest moment in the history of the Ecuador national team. He noted that the team’s aim is to have their best World Cup ever, which would involve at least matching their 2006 performance. Beccacece expressed his desire for people to appreciate his players, stating, “I want people to fall in love with these footballers because this Ecuadorean team makes people fall in love with them.”
The win against Germany, a four-time world champion, demonstrated Ecuador’s resilience. The match also saw VAR interventions, including a disallowed Germany penalty after a foul on Pedro Vite was identified in the build-up. Ecuador defended effectively in the closing stages to secure their place in the next round.
Germany, despite the loss, will need to recover from their first defeat of the tournament as they prepare to face a third-place finisher from another group in the round of 32.
Ecuador’s dramatic victory means Scotland’s hopes of progressing as a third-placed team were dented, as they dropped to the final eighth spot in the third-place table.
Gonzalo Plata, the match-winner, emphasized the team’s belief, stating, “We have 26 players who will give their all for Ecuador.”
