Historic Qualification for Ivory Coast
The Ivory Coast national football team has advanced to the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time in its history. This landmark achievement came after a 2-0 victory over Curaçao, with both goals scored by Nicolas Pépé. The win secured second place in Group E for the Ivorians, marking a significant moment for the African nation.
Prior to this tournament, the Ivory Coast had participated in three previous World Cups but had never progressed beyond the group stage. This long-awaited advancement ends a series of near misses and disappointments for the team and its supporters, fulfilling a goal that previous generations, including those led by players like Didier Drogba and Yaya Touré, were unable to achieve.
The Ivorians needed only a point from their match against Curaçao to qualify for the round of 32. Their performance ensured a comfortable victory, demonstrating their determination to secure their place in the next phase of the tournament. This success also marks the first time the Ivory Coast has won two matches in a single World Cup tournament.
Match Highlights and Key Performances
The opening goal for the Ivory Coast came early in the match, just seven minutes after kick-off. Yan Diomande dispossessed Curaçao’s defenders, setting up Nicolas Pépé for a tap-in. This early lead helped to settle any nerves and set the tone for the rest of the game.
Pépé then secured his second goal in the 65th minute. The former Arsenal forward slotted a left-footed strike into the top corner of the net, leaving Curaçao goalkeeper Eloy Room with no chance. This brace from Pépé was crucial in sealing the victory and the historic qualification for his team.
Despite the loss, Curaçao, the smallest nation by population to ever play at a men’s World Cup, put up a fight and created several scoring opportunities. Their best chance came shortly before half-time when forward Juninho Bacuna broke into the box but fired wide. Curaçao finished bottom of Group E with one point from three matches, having earned their first World Cup point from a draw against Ecuador.
Looking Ahead for the Ivory Coast
The Ivory Coast’s journey to the knockout stages has been attributed to the team’s strong spirit and mental strength, particularly highlighted by their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations victory. Under coach Emerse Faé, the squad has demonstrated tactical prowess and resilience, overcoming past challenges and expectations.
The team’s success in the Africa Cup of Nations, where they won the trophy despite a change in management during the group stage, showcased their ability to perform under pressure. This triumph appears to have forged a resilient group of players who are now making their mark on the global stage.
The Ivory Coast will now prepare to face either France or Norway in the round of 32. This upcoming match is scheduled to take place on June 30 in Arlington, Texas. Their opponents will be the runners-up from Group I, setting the stage for another challenging encounter in their historic World Cup campaign.
Their advancement marks an end to a 20-year wait since their first World Cup appearance, finally moving past the group stage jinx that had plagued them in previous tournaments.

The Ivorians’ previous World Cup campaigns included tough draws and heartbreaking exits. In 2006, they were in a difficult group with Argentina and the Netherlands, managing a victory over Serbia and Montenegro but failing to advance. The 2010 tournament saw them hold Portugal to a goalless draw but ultimately miss out on progression after losses to Brazil and a win against North Korea.
Perhaps the most memorable disappointment for fans was in 2014, when the Ivory Coast were favorites to progress in their final group game against Greece but conceded a 93rd-minute goal, resulting in a 2-1 defeat. These past experiences, combined with failing to qualify for the last two World Cups, added significant pressure on the current squad to break the group stage barrier.
Coach Emerse Faé has been praised for getting the best out of his players both tactically and by alleviating pressure. His leadership has been instrumental in guiding this new generation of Ivorian footballers to a significant milestone, providing their fans with a major reason to celebrate.
The Ivory Coast’s next match in the World Cup round of 32 is set for June 30.
