Chelsea have reportedly reached a verbal agreement with Aston Villa for the transfer of Morgan Rogers. A bid of £117 million has been accepted for the attacking midfielder, with the finalisation of the deal still in progress. Personal terms for Rogers include a six-year contract, potentially extending to seven years with an option for an additional 12 months, through to 2032. A medical examination is scheduled for Monday.
Rogers, who is currently 23 years old, is said to be keen on the move to Chelsea, with the club’s project and the prospect of working under new manager Xabi Alonso being significant attractions. Arsenal had also expressed interest in the England international, but Rogers reportedly chose Chelsea as his preferred destination.
Record-breaking transfer
This anticipated deal is set to establish a new record transfer for Chelsea. It would surpass the previous club record for a signing, which was for Enzo Fernandez in the 2023 winter transfer window. Furthermore, the transfer fee would reportedly exceed the British record fee previously agreed upon by Manchester City for Elliot Anderson this summer.
Rogers’ current contract with Aston Villa extends until 2030, following new terms he signed in November 2024. This agreement added a year to his prior contract and adjusted his salary to align with his role in Unai Emery’s squad. He joined Villa Park from Middlesbrough in February 2024.
As part of that initial deal, Middlesbrough also holds a sell-on clause. Reports indicate that Middlesbrough is set to receive an additional amount from this sale due to the clause, which was for a percentage of any future profit Villa made on the winger’s sale.
Rogers has developed into a prominent attacking midfielder in the Premier League over the past two seasons. He has contributed significantly to Aston Villa, scoring 31 goals and providing 29 assists in 125 appearances. During the 2025-26 campaign, he registered 14 goals and 12 assists across 55 appearances in all competitions, a season in which Villa qualified for the Champions League and won the Europa League.
His performances led to his first senior England call-up in November 2024. He has since participated in six of his country’s World Cup matches, starting in the final group-stage game against Panama and the match against Argentina. Rogers is currently with the England squad in the U.S. for Saturday’s third-place play-off against France, having assisted England’s only goal in the semi-final.
Tactical fit and club implications
Rogers is described as a versatile talent, capable of playing in multiple positions and possessing strong ball-carrying abilities. Aston Villa was reportedly aware that they might lose Rogers, but only for a substantial fee. The club plans to reinvest some of the funds from this sale, with targets including wingers such as Paris Saint-Germain’s Ibrahim Mbaye and West Ham United’s Crysencio Summerville. Villa has also made other significant signings, including Johan Manzambi and Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes.
The critical question for Chelsea is how Rogers’ skillset will integrate into the team. New manager Xabi Alonso, during his time at Bayer Leverkusen, often employed a 3-4-2-1 attacking system. This formation typically featured wing-backs providing width and two No. 10s operating in half-spaces to support a central striker. This tactical approach could offer insights into Alonso’s plans for Rogers, potentially seeing him form a partnership with fellow new signing Marco Palestra. Cole Palmer could also be given a more central, free-roaming role within this system.
Alonso’s tactical flexibility has been noted throughout his coaching career. The acquisitions of Rogers and Palestra suggest a potential return to an expansive back-three system, aiming to replicate a successful formula.
For Arsenal, Rogers was considered a primary target for the transfer window. Manager Mikel Arteta was reportedly seeking players to enhance the attacking quality, particularly from the left side, and Rogers’ versatility was seen as beneficial. However, the asking price for Rogers reportedly escalated beyond Arsenal’s expectations. With Arsenal evaluating other options, Chelsea moved decisively to secure the player.
Arsenal is now expected to explore alternative targets, such as Bradley Barcola of Paris Saint-Germain. The sale of Rogers represents a significant challenge for Aston Villa, despite having tied him to a contract until 2031. The record-breaking fee proved difficult to decline as the club manages financial regulations. Rogers was voted PFA Young Player of the Season last term.
Rogers will become Chelsea’s most expensive signing, surpassing the amount paid for Moises Caicedo in 2023. He is also set to become the most expensive British player, following Manchester City’s acquisition of Elliot Anderson this summer. Rogers is one of several former Manchester City youth players to join Chelsea since the club’s recent takeover, a trend overseen by Chelsea’s co-director of recruitment and talent, Joe Shields, who previously worked in academy recruitment at Manchester City. Provided he passes his medical on Monday, Rogers is expected to become a Chelsea player early next week.
