Investigation into Adams’s passing
Police in Cape Town, South Africa, have initiated an investigation into the death of footballer Jayden Adams. His body was discovered shortly after he returned from North America, where he participated in the FIFA World Cup. The South African Football Players Union confirmed his death on Saturday.
Adams, a midfielder for South Africa‘s national team, was found deceased at a residence in the Schotsche Kloof neighbourhood of Cape Town. The cause of his death has not yet been publicly disclosed.
Tributes and World Cup performance
Adams was a key player for South Africa during the recent World Cup. He started in two of the three matches he played, including the 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic. This particular match took place just one day after the death of his grandmother, Marianna. He also started in the game where South Africa experienced a 2-0 loss to Mexico and appeared as a substitute in a 1-0 victory over South Korea.
His father, Juanito Adams, shared on Sunday that the family is struggling to cope with the loss. He noted the widespread reaction to Jayden‘s death, highlighting the global affection for his football and for him as an individual. Adams was an unused substitute when South Africa was eliminated from the tournament by Canada on June 28.
A moment of silence was observed in honour of Adams before the quarterfinal match between England and Norway on Saturday. Gayton McKenzie, South Africa‘s minister of sports, arts and culture, issued a statement referencing Adams‘s decision to play shortly after his grandmother’s death. McKenzie described Adams‘s choice to represent his country with dedication during that period as a reflection of his profound character and professionalism.
The South African Football Players Union expressed its devastation over the untimely passing of Adams, who debuted for his country in 2022. The union highlighted his recent representation of South Africa at the 2026 World Cup, where he carried the nation’s hopes with pride. His passing is considered a significant loss to his family, teammates, clubs, and the broader football community.
Career and impact
Adams began his career at Stellenbosch FC before moving to Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025. With Mamelodi Sundowns, he achieved both league and African Champions League titles. He was also part of the South Africa squad that reached the semi-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
He was called up to Hugo Broos‘ squad for the World Cup, where the team made history by reaching the knockout stages for the first time. FIFA president Gianni Infantino conveyed his condolences, stating that his thoughts are with Adams‘s family, friends, and teammates, and that the Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns star will be greatly missed.
McKenzie has appealed to the media and the public to avoid speculation regarding the cause of death, requesting restraint and compassion for the family and Mamelodi Sundowns during this difficult time. He assured that any official information would be communicated by the appropriate parties in due course. Adams was 25 years old at the time of his passing.
