Winter storm warning

A rare May blizzard has struck the Sierra Nevada, leading to a winter storm warning that could cause major highway closures. Snowfall may reach up to 4 feet in the highest peaks.

As of early Tuesday, wind gusts are expected to hit 70 mph along the Sierra crest. Localized gusts could even reach 80 mph. Travel conditions have turned hazardous on major routes like Interstate 80 over Donner Pass and Highway 50.

Snow levels are forecasted to drop dramatically, from around 7,000 feet to as low as 4,500 feet. Chain control regulations will be enforced at elevations above 5,000 feet.

Officials recommend postponing non-essential travel until at least Tuesday. They warn that this storm may be unusual for May but its impacts are significant and potentially dangerous for anyone caught unprepared.

Key facts:

  • Snowfall expected: Up to 4 feet in highest peaks
  • Wind gusts: Up to 70 mph along the crest
  • Chain controls: Enforced above 5,000 feet
  • Travel advisory: Postpone non-essential trips

The National Weather Service has stated that visibility issues will arise during the heaviest snowfall periods. Travel may become extremely challenging, and tire traction will be reduced.

This storm is part of a Pacific low-pressure system moving eastward into Nevada, Colorado, and New Mexico after impacting California.
