Karachi is bracing for extreme heat with temperatures potentially reaching a dangerous ‘feels-like’ level of 50°C. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) issued a heatwave alert for the city, warning that maximum temperatures could exceed 41°C on Monday and reach 40°C on Sunday.
As of early Tuesday, humidity levels in Karachi are expected to peak at around 45% on Saturday and rise to 70% on Sunday morning. On May 2, Karachi recorded a maximum temperature of 38.5°C.
Temperatures in interior Sindh have already soared as high as 44°C in Mohenjo-daro, indicating a severe heatwave affecting the region. Dust storms and strong winds are also forecasted over the weekend in several districts including Jacobabad and Larkana.
The PMD advises vulnerable groups to take precautionary measures against the severe heat. Residents are urged to avoid going out in direct sunlight during the daytime and to increase their water intake.
Key temperature forecasts:
- Maximum temperatures in Karachi over three days are expected to range between 36-41°C.
- The ‘feels-like’ temperature may reach up to 50°C during the heatwave.
- Humidity levels are projected to peak at about 70% on Sunday morning.
PMD Deputy Director Anjum Nazir Zaigham stated, “The intensity of heat in the metropolis is likely to increase further from Sunday onwards.” The overall outlook for May and June remains severe, with intense heatwaves likely across parts of Sindh.
