Weather: Karachi Faces Extreme Heat with 42°C Temperatures

Karachi is experiencing extreme heat with temperatures reaching 42°C, prompting health warnings and precautionary measures. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported this alarming temperature on Sunday.

On Saturday, the maximum temperature recorded was 38.5°C. The PMD forecasts that heatwave conditions will persist until May 3. Temperatures could rise to 40°C on Sunday and further to 41°C on Monday.

Health officials are particularly concerned about the impact of this heatwave on vulnerable populations. They advise people to wear light-colored clothing and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities.

Key health recommendations:

  • Avoid going outdoors during peak sunlight hours.
  • Cover heads with caps or cloth for protection from direct sunlight.
  • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water.

Anjum Nazir Zaigham from the PMD noted that westerly winds are expected to bring slight relief after this phase, temporarily reducing the intensity of the heat. However, temperatures are predicted to stay above normal in May and June.

Further increases of 3 to 4 degrees are expected after May 6, raising concerns about prolonged exposure to extreme weather conditions across southern Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan.

Muhammad Aslam, a health official, emphasized the importance of outdoor safety during this period. He stated that precautions are essential to prevent heat-related illnesses.
