Tariq Malik has been named one of the world’s top 25 identity leaders by Okta. This recognition occurred on May 5, 2026, when his image was displayed on the Nasdaq billboard in Times Square, New York City.
This award underscores the critical role of governance in digital identity systems. Malik emphasized that “digital identity succeeds or fails not on technology, but on whether its governance can withstand political pressure.”
Malik previously served as chairman of Nadra until 2013. He completed his three-year term before taking up his current role as a technical adviser to the World Bank’s Identification for Development (ID4D) programme.
His expertise spans large-scale digital identity projects across Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East. He has also been recognized among the World’s 100 most influential people in digital government by Apolitical.
In 2009, Malik received the Outstanding Achievement Award at the ID World International Congress in Italy. He later earned the Sitara-i-Imtiaz for advancing governance through digital innovation.
Malik stated that successful systems must deliver value to citizens from day one. They should ensure inclusive enrolment and embed visible safeguards to protect users.
The honorees at this event were acknowledged for their tireless efforts in software creation and strategic implementation to keep digital transactions safe and seamless. However, further details regarding the selection criteria have not been disclosed.
