Aston Villa has confirmed the signing of Alejandro Garnacho from Chelsea on a season-long loan. The agreement includes a conditional obligation to buy, which is considered to be easily achievable. The total package, including the loan fee, is understood to meet Chelsea’s valuation.
Reports indicate that Chelsea had been seeking £42.6m for the winger. Garnacho, an Argentina international, joined Chelsea last summer from Manchester United for £40m and is now departing on loan less than 12 months after his arrival. Manchester United could be due around £260k if Garnacho’s move to Villa becomes permanent, due to a 10 per cent sell-on clause in their deal with Chelsea.
Garnacho had not reported for pre-season training at Chelsea, allowing him to pursue a move away. This deal follows a British-record transfer fee of £117m for Morgan Rogers, who moved from Aston Villa to Chelsea.
Garnacho’s Hopes and Emery’s Confidence
In his first interview with Aston Villa’s media, Garnacho expressed his hope to regain confidence under Unai Emery after a challenging season at Stamford Bridge. “I think I was looking for a club that I could get confidence from and help me try to be the player that I was years ago from my first years at [Manchester] United,” he stated. He added, “I spoke with the manager and he’s given me that confidence.”
Emery, the Villa boss, also shared his delight regarding the signing. “We are delighted with Alejandro. He is so talented, young and he showed us his wish to help our project. We are really happy,” Emery said in a statement after the club confirmed the signing.
Garnacho noted the importance of being part of the Champions League, having observed Villa in the Europa League last season. He also mentioned that his conversation with Emery before joining provided him with confidence.
The 22-year-old forward will wear the No. 17 shirt at Villa, the same number he wore for Manchester United and Argentina during his eight appearances for the national team. He will join fellow Argentines Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez and Emiliano Buendía in the squad.
Financial Considerations and Deal Structure
The transfer deal for Garnacho was complex due to recent financial sustainability regulations. Both Aston Villa and Chelsea were recently fined by UEFA for breaching these regulations and are navigating strict guidelines to avoid further sanctions. Chelsea, in particular, entered a four-year settlement agreement with UEFA last year, making them subject to stricter financial rules despite not competing in European competitions this season.
Aston Villa generated a significant profit from the sale of Rogers to Chelsea, which will aid their compliance with both UEFA and Premier League financial constraints. The club also needs to rebuild its squad following multiple departures to ensure competitiveness across all fronts this season.
Chelsea made Garnacho available for transfer this summer, and Villa was in search of a winger, with Emery admiring the Argentine player. A straightforward permanent deal would have complicated Villa’s ability to secure the British transfer-record fee from Chelsea for Rogers. This is because UEFA guidelines could deem two player transfers in opposite directions as a ‘player exchange transaction’ if concluded within 45 days and having similar payment obligations.
If the Garnacho and Rogers deals were considered a single player exchange transaction, Villa’s profit would be reduced in UEFA calculations to the net difference in fees, significantly impacting the profit from the Rogers sale. A loan with an obligation to buy was structured to allow Chelsea to guarantee a permanent sale while circumventing these player exchange transaction rules.
UEFA is actively addressing loopholes, and if a condition is considered virtually certain, the player’s registration must be recognised as a permanent transfer from the loan agreement’s inception. Therefore, the deal was crafted to have enough jeopardy to satisfy UEFA that a permanent move is not a foregone conclusion, while Chelsea believes the conditions for a permanent move are “easily achievable.”
Garnacho’s presentation to fans included a gesture that resonated with Argentine supporters: he posed with an Argentine flag draped over his shoulders during the official photo session, reaffirming his connection with La Albiceleste. This is not the first time he has shown his allegiance, having made a similar gesture when he won the FA Cup with Manchester United. The image was widely discussed, highlighting the bond between the player and the Argentine national team, despite his absence from Lionel Scaloni’s list for the 2026 World Cup.
Garnacho made 43 official appearances for Chelsea, scoring eight goals and providing four assists during his time with the club.
