Leclerc Leads Opening Session
Charles Leclerc of Ferrari recorded the fastest time in Free Practice 1 ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix. The Monegasque driver posted a 1m 19.075s, placing him half a second ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. However, his session concluded prematurely when his Ferrari experienced a mechanical issue in the final 10 minutes, bringing the car to a stop at the pit lane entry.
Many teams have introduced upgrades for the Budapest event, with drivers quickly taking to the Hungaroring circuit. This session also featured five rookie drivers, including Fred Vesti in Kimi Antonelli’s Mercedes, while the Drivers’ Championship leader observed from the sidelines.
Initially, George Russell moved to the top of the timesheets with a 1m 22.056s on medium Pirelli tyres. Leclerc then set a 1m 20.884s as track conditions improved. Verstappen later took the lead with a 1m 20.788s, despite reporting issues with downshifts.
Leclerc was briefly impeded by Lewis Hamilton before setting a new best time of 1m 20.287s. Hamilton then moved into second place, though he noted his car’s ride was too stiff. Colton Herta, driving for Cadillac, and Alex Albon’s Williams both experienced lock-ups.
Russell was the first to switch to soft tyres, achieving a 1m 20.066s, but Verstappen quickly surpassed this with a 1m 19.559s. Leclerc, using the red-walled tyre, further lowered the best time to 1m 19.075s, maintaining his lead over Verstappen. Russell also reported issues with his Mercedes’ ride after a significant lock-up.
Red Flag Incident and Aston Martin’s Setback
A red flag was deployed with just over 20 minutes remaining when Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin stopped at the exit of Turn 3. The incident occurred due to a failure in the left-rear suspension, which led to a spin. The session resumed with 17 minutes left, allowing teams to continue with qualifying simulations.
Stroll’s incident was attributed to a suspension issue, ending his session. Aston Martin had introduced 16 updates for the Hungarian Grand Prix, including changes to the rear suspension. The team later confirmed that Stroll would not participate in FP2 as there was insufficient time to repair the damage to his AMR26.
The Silverstone-based team had made various modifications, such as to the front wing, nose, floor body, diffuser, and rear suspension. The issue with Stroll’s car appeared to originate from the rear suspension, where minor adjustments had been made to leg positions and external fairings. Stroll lost control of the car while entering Turn 3 but managed to avoid hitting the wall.
Honda is investigating vibrations from FP1 and plans to implement countermeasures for the second free practice session. The updates brought by Aston Martin, including the rear suspension, were hoped to improve lap times significantly.
Session Conclusion and Driver Line-up
Leclerc remained the fastest driver at the chequered flag, despite his session ending early. Verstappen finished ahead of Hamilton, with Isack Hadjar securing a top-four position for Red Bull. The top 10 also included Russell, Gabriel Bortoleto for Audi, Vesti, Nico Hulkenberg in the second Audi, and the two Racing Bulls drivers, Arvid Lindblad and Liam Lawson.
Lando Norris finished in P11, followed by Esteban Ocon for Haas, Fernando Alonso utilising Aston Martin’s new upgrade, Alpine’s Pierre Gasly, and Albon. Leonardo Fornaroli was in action for McLaren, testing a new rear wing design. Other drivers participating included Ryo Hirakawa for Haas, Sergio Perez for Cadillac, Paul Aron for Alpine, Herta, Stroll, and Carlos Sainz, who completed the order before FP2 later on Friday.
