Shenyang J-35: China’s New Fighter Jet for Pakistan

China’s J-35AE fighter jet is positioned to challenge Western dominance in the fifth-generation aircraft market, with Pakistan as its first potential customer. The J-35AE is an export-focused variant of the Shenyang J-35A.

Pakistan could acquire up to 40 of these advanced aircraft. This deal reflects China’s strategy to penetrate markets constrained by Western export controls.

The J-35AE features a teal-coated electro-optical targeting system (EOTS). Liang Guoliang noted, “The J-35AE shown in the footage is equipped with a teal-coated electro-optical targeting system (EOTS), signalling advanced sensor maturity and survivability against infrared tracking, laser interference and multi-spectrum detection.”

This aircraft has a combat radius of approximately 1,200 to 1,350 kilometres. It can carry up to six air-to-air missiles in internal bays without compromising its radar signature.

The J-35AE’s design includes a twin-engine, single-seat configuration optimized for survivability. Its performance characteristics align with medium-weight stealth fighter classifications.

The unveiling of the J-35AE is viewed as a strategic instrument of defense diplomacy for China. It represents a structural shift in the accessibility of fifth-generation airpower, challenging the monopoly previously held by Western platforms.

However, uncertainties remain. The exact timeline for Pakistan’s formal acquisition of the J-35AE depends on political and financial variables. Moreover, the full maturity of the J-35AE’s sensor fusion compared to Western systems is still unclear.

By 2025, over 57 units of the J-35 had reportedly been manufactured, indicating sustained production efforts from AVIC.
