Rat: Man Arrested for Poison in Baby Food in Austria

A 39-year-old man was arrested in Austria for lacing baby food jars with rat poison. This act is believed to be part of an extortion scheme against the organic baby food brand HiPP.

The arrest occurred early Tuesday, following a product recall issued by HiPP. The recall came after authorities discovered rat poison in multiple jars of baby food.

Authorities recovered five tampered jars before they could be consumed. These jars were found across Austria, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia.

One jar contained 15 microgrammes of rat poison and was purchased at a Spar supermarket in Burgenland. The suspect faces serious charges, including deliberately causing public danger and attempted grievous bodily harm.

Officials suspect that this contamination was part of a larger extortion effort targeting HiPP. The company has confirmed that its products were not tainted during production.

The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety has advised the public to avoid certain HiPP products as a precaution. Symptoms of rat poison ingestion typically appear two to five days after consumption.

Law enforcement agencies from multiple countries are collaborating on this investigation due to its cross-border implications. Police have stated that they believe the crime was executed to extort the company.

Key facts about the case:

  • The suspect remains under investigation related to the tampering of HiPP baby food products sold in retail stores.
  • The recall was issued after the discovery of rat poison in the jars.
  • HiPP stressed that their production process was not compromised by this criminal act.

Helmut Marban from the Austrian police commented, “However, for tactical investigative reasons, we cannot provide any information about the further steps of the investigation.” Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as they gather more evidence.
