Piastri addresses McLaren future amid Verstappen speculation

Oscar Piastri has expressed comfort with his position at McLaren amidst ongoing speculation linking Max Verstappen to the team. Piastri, known for his calm demeanor, stated he is “very comfortable” in his current role, despite rumors suggesting Verstappen could potentially move to McLaren.

The Australian driver’s comments come as the Formula 1 rumor mill intensifies, particularly concerning Verstappen’s future with Red Bull. Verstappen, a four-time world champion, is under contract until 2028, but reports suggest an exit clause might allow him to leave if he falls below second place in the drivers’ standings by the summer break. Verstappen is currently seventh in the standings, 78 points behind second place.

Piastri’s confidence in McLaren

Piastri confirmed that conversations with McLaren chief executive Zak Brown and team principal Andrea Stella have been reassuring. He trusts the team and their belief in him, stating, “The team have told me they’re happy with me, so I trust them and believe in them, and I appreciate their belief in me as well.” He also gave a one-word “Yes” when asked if he would be with McLaren next year.

While acknowledging the “noise” surrounding his future and Verstappen’s potential involvement, Piastri remains unfazed. He noted that Verstappen is an “incredible talent” who seeks the best possible position, making it understandable if he is exploring options due to current performance struggles. However, Piastri emphasized, “I’m very comfortable that I’m not going anywhere.”

Piastri is contracted with McLaren until 2028. He dismissed concerns about McLaren management potentially holding talks with Verstappen without his knowledge, stating he was “not really that bothered” and trusts the team.

Current season challenges and marketing duties

The current Formula 1 season has presented challenges for Piastri and McLaren. The new F1 regulations for 2026 have altered the grid, with Mercedes and Ferrari showing improved performance while McLaren, last year’s constructors’ champions, have seen a dip. Piastri currently sits sixth in the championship standings with 82 points, a result of a difficult start to the season, some misfortune, and reduced pace.

Despite a podium finish in Miami and Japan, and a close call in Austria, neither McLaren nor Piastri appear to be in championship contention at this stage. Piastri admitted that the team is “just not quick enough, really.” He hopes that an upgrade package for the Belgian Grand Prix and a “significant upgrade package” for Hungary will help improve their performance.

Beyond the track, modern F1 drivers have extensive responsibilities, including media engagements, advertising deals, and managing social media presence. Piastri, who has 6.5 million followers on Instagram, understands the importance of marketing in a sport he describes as “not cheap.” He participates in photoshoots for publications like Vanity Fair France and features in advertising campaigns, recognizing these as integral parts of his job.

Piastri also shared insights into his pre-race routine, mentioning that he sometimes sings to himself during races, often repeating whatever music he has heard that day. He joked that his teammate Lando Norris used to play music aloud, creating “earworms” that would get stuck in his head. Piastri has achieved significant accolades in his career, including winning the Formula Renault Eurocup in 2019, Formula 3 in 2020, and F2 in 2021, alongside his nine grand prix wins in F1.
