On May 1, 2026, Maryam Nawaz announced a Rs23 billion development package aimed at revitalizing the Katcha areas of Punjab. This initiative seeks to transform these historically underdeveloped regions into secure and prosperous communities.
Key allocations include:
- Rs7.1 billion dedicated to improving law and order.
- Rs13.9 billion earmarked for social infrastructure projects.
- Rs1.7 billion for various other development initiatives.
The plan also includes distributing 14,500 acres of state land to local residents. This move aims to empower the community and provide them with resources for sustainable living.
Additionally, the package promises significant improvements in education and healthcare. Specifically, 65 schools will be upgraded, and 16 new schools will be built. Furthermore, two girls’ colleges are set to be constructed in the Katcha areas.
A mobile clinic service and veterinary hospitals will also be established to enhance healthcare access. Moreover, a solar-powered drone surveillance system will be introduced to improve security measures in the region.
The Punjab government has also approved a skills development program worth Rs125 million, aimed at equipping local youth with essential skills for employment. Officials noted that no major criminal incident has been reported in the belt for the last five months, indicating progress in law enforcement efforts.
Azma Bokhari stated, “The Katcha areas would now be fully transformed into a developed and secure region.” However, observers are keen to see how effectively these plans will be implemented in such challenging environments.
