Fuel price: Traders Express Concern Over Rising s and Insufficient Fuel Subsidies

Traders express serious concerns over rising fuel prices, which have significantly affected their operating costs. As of early Tuesday, many traders at local markets reported that existing fuel subsidies are not enough to offset these increases.

Muhammad Mukhlash Nasirin, a vegetable seller with over 25 years in the business, stated, “Things are really difficult now because fuel prices have gone up significantly.” His situation reflects a broader trend among traders reliant on affordable fuel for their operations.

Fish seller Mohd Hairul Anuar Mukhlas highlighted the challenges of sourcing supplies, noting he must travel long distances, incurring high fuel costs. Filling a full tank now costs nearly RM400—even with the subsidy.

Fruit seller Muhammad Mustaqim Firdaus pointed out that rising fuel prices directly impact profit margins for perishable goods. He added, “The subsidy is not enough. It runs out in less than a month.” Traders fear the implications for their businesses if no intervention occurs.

The Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, plans to address these pressing issues at an upcoming Cabinet meeting. He aims to explore ways to enhance the effectiveness of subsidies and manage rising costs more effectively.

Experts suggest that without adequate support, many small traders may struggle to stay afloat. The urgency of this situation cannot be overstated as traders face increasing pressure from both operating costs and market conditions.

As discussions unfold within the government, traders remain hopeful for solutions that could alleviate their financial burdens and ensure their livelihoods continue amidst escalating fuel prices.
