Fighter aircraft: Surge in Sales Following India-Pakistan Conflict

Chinese fighter jet sales surged significantly following their successful deployment during the India-Pakistan conflict in May 2025. Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry stated, “Of course, lately, recent Chinese platforms, they’ve demonstrated exceptionally well.” This conflict marked a real-world test of modern Chinese military hardware.

Key statistics:

  • Chengdu Aircraft Corporation’s revenue increased by 15.8% to 75.4 billion yuan ($11 billion) in 2025.
  • The company’s profits rose by 6.5% to 3.4 billion yuan, the highest in its history.

The Pakistan Air Force inducted the J-10C fighter jet in March 2022. During the May 2025 conflict, Pakistan downed seven Indian fighter jets, including French-made Rafale jets. This event showcased the effectiveness of Chinese military technology.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has struggled with a shortfall of combat squadrons. Officials estimate a deficiency of about 220-250 aircraft. Since 2001, the IAF has placed purchase orders for only 40 Tejas light combat aircraft.

The Tejas Mark 1A is expected to have an indigenous content of 50% by the end of its production program. The first order for 83 Tejas Mark 1A fighters is likely to be completed by the end of 2028-29.

Pakistan has employed advanced Chinese weaponry to enhance its military edge over India. The conflict ended on May 10, 2025, with a ceasefire agreement brokered by the US.
