Tuchel’s Humour and Haaland Apology

England manager Thomas Tuchel recently shared a humorous anecdote regarding his 2021 Coach of the Year award from German newspaper Bild. He jokingly suggested that the award was inevitable, stating, “Yeah… there was no way out. Because if Jurgen Klopp won at the same time the Charity Shield they give it to him…” This playful remark comes as England prepares to face Erling Haaland’s Norway in a World Cup quarter-final match in Miami.

Tuchel also recalled an instance where he had to apologise for comments he made about potentially signing Haaland for Chelsea after winning the Champions League in 2021. At the time, Haaland was playing for Borussia Dortmund, and Tuchel had expressed interest in bringing him to Chelsea. Haaland later joined Manchester City.

The England boss has prior experience with Haaland‘s impact on the field. During the 2019-20 Champions League, when Tuchel managed Paris Saint-Germain, Haaland scored two goals against his team in a last-16 first-leg match. Later, in the 2022-23 season, while Tuchel was at Bayern Munich, Haaland scored in both legs of a Champions League quarter-final tie against Manchester City.

Focus on Haaland and Team Identity

Despite the presence of other talented players in the Norway squad, Tuchel emphasised that the primary focus for England‘s central defenders will be on stopping Haaland. He acknowledged Haaland‘s quality and his tendency to arrive at the second post, noting that defenders must decide whether to engage him physically or maintain zonal marking. Tuchel also pointed out that Norway is not hesitant to play long balls to Alexander Sorloth, who can physically challenge opponents.

Haaland has been in strong form during the current World Cup, scoring seven goals in four appearances, including two in Norway‘s 2-1 victory over Brazil in the last 16. This win marked Norway‘s first time reaching this stage of a World Cup. Haaland has also engaged with fans off the field, sharing images of a shopping trip in Dallas where he purchased a cowboy hat and boots.

Haaland has attempted to shift pressure onto England, stating, “There are some clear favourites out there and England are one of them. So I think all of you [in the media] should put every single pressure on the English lads.” However, Tuchel dismissed this notion, highlighting Norway‘s strong performance in eliminating a significant team like Brazil. He added that his players are not feeling the pressure or playing with fear.

Tuchel also discussed the team’s identity, acknowledging that England needs to improve their play. He mentioned the need to spend more time in the opponent’s half, overcome high presses, and improve deep build-up and high press connections. He noted that the team’s identity has not been as evident in the tournament, suggesting that players might be overthinking their actions.

Coping with Miami Heat

The upcoming match against Norway will present a new challenge for England due to the high temperatures expected in Miami. Weather forecasts indicate potential rain and heat exceeding 32 degrees Celsius for the quarter-final. This will be the first time England has played in such conditions during the tournament, having previously experienced rain in Mexico City and an air-conditioned stadium in Atlanta.

Tuchel expressed confidence that England‘s preparation and research, including heat training sessions, will provide them with a slight advantage. He stated, “Science says that we banked a lot of heat training. That will help us.” He also mentioned that the team had spent time in the heat recently. Tuchel recalled that upon arriving in Miami, they anticipated the heat would be challenging, but hoped for a dark cloud or rain to provide some relief. He believes that all the training and preparation undertaken since the start of their journey in America was aimed at preparing for these conditions.

Tuchel hopes that his team will enjoy their experience in Miami as much as they did in Mexico City, where he found the experience of changing countries and playing in a football-loving nation to be very special.

The England manager is confident that the warm-weather training, particularly the pre-tournament camp in Florida and the hot conditions in Kansas City where England has its base, will benefit the players. He believes that the scientific approach to their heat training will ensure they have not lost their acclimatisation. The match against Norway is scheduled for Saturday in Miami.
