Argentine President Javier Milei has stated that his country is “envied” by others, a sentiment he expressed amidst criticism regarding the national team’s performance and conduct during the recent 2026 FIFA World Cup. His remarks followed Argentina‘s defeat to Spain in the tournament’s final match.
According to Milei, the core issue for Argentina is its tendency to stand out and excel in various areas. He conveyed this perspective through a message shared on Instagram, asserting that the country cannot be overlooked and that people are “jealous” due to its widespread success. He noted that someone needed to articulate this view.
Post-Final Reactions
The president’s comments came after Argentina finished as the runner-up in the World Cup, with Spain securing a 1-0 victory in extra time during the final. This win marked Spain‘s second time claiming the World Cup trophy. Milei‘s statements also addressed the controversial behaviour that reportedly followed Argentina‘s loss.
In a notable incident, Milei reportedly published a pre-scheduled tweet prematurely, celebrating an Argentina victory and announcing a national holiday. This tweet was later found to be mistaken, as Argentina did not win the final, meaning the national holiday would not occur.
Milei was direct in his assessment following the 1-0 loss to Spain, particularly focusing on refereeing decisions. He insisted that these decisions went against Argentina‘s team, despite the team managing only two shots throughout the entire match. This viewpoint from the president contrasts with a prevailing impression during the tournament that suggested Argentina had benefited from numerous favourable refereeing calls.
He further elaborated on the match, describing it as “very difficult” for Argentina. Despite the challenging circumstances and the run of play not being in their favour, Milei believed that Argentina still had the potential to secure an equaliser in the final minutes of the game.

Milei also highlighted Argentina‘s conduct throughout the tournament, characterising it as disciplined and balanced. He maintained that the team consistently adopted balanced positions, even when facing what he considered incorrect refereeing decisions in some matches. He praised the team’s reaction in these moments, describing it as balanced, organised, and marked by a fighting spirit until the very end.
In addition to his direct comments, Milei shared a quote attributed to former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill on Instagram: “You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life.” He added his own message, stating, “We stand up for Argentina.”
Further demonstrating his support, Milei posted an AI-generated image of himself on Instagram, depicting him opening his shirt to reveal an Argentine national team jersey. This image was accompanied by the message: “Long live Argentina!” In another separate post, he expressed optimism for the future, stating, “Now the world will see how far a country full of Argentines can go.”
These messages from President Milei were released amidst considerable discussion on social media platforms concerning Argentina‘s World Cup campaign, including both praise and criticism regarding the team’s behaviour and the allegations of favourable refereeing decisions.
