Assault Charges and Court Appearance
Former boxing world champion Joe Cordina has pleaded not guilty to two charges of assault by beating. The Cardiff boxer, a two-time IBF super-featherweight champion, appeared at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday. The charges stem from an incident alleged to have occurred outside Pentwyn Service Station in Cardiff on February 27 this year.
During the court hearing, Cordina, 34, confirmed his name, date of birth, and address. He pleaded not guilty to two counts of assault by beating involving Jamie O’Brien. South Wales Police previously stated that the charges relate to an incident where the two men are alleged to have acted against each other.
Nadeem Majid, representing Cordina, indicated that the second assault charge is connected to the same ongoing incident. Cordina’s defense stated that any actions taken were in self-defense. A separate charge of threatening a person with an offensive weapon in a public place has been discontinued.
Jamie O’Brien, 32, from Pentwyn, also appeared in court alongside Cordina, facing a charge of assault by beating. O’Brien did not enter a plea during the hearing. His case has been adjourned until August 26 to determine if it can be resolved outside of court.
District Judge Charlotte Murphy has scheduled a trial date for Cordina for October 13. She granted Cordina unconditional bail until the trial, stating that his not guilty plea necessitates a trial.
US Visa Refusal and Fight Cancellation
The court appearance follows the cancellation of a significant boxing match for Cordina in the United States. Cordina was scheduled to compete for the WBO lightweight title against Abdullah Mason in Cleveland on July 4. However, his application for a US visa was refused, leading to the cancellation of the fight.
Cordina addressed the situation on Instagram, clarifying that the cancellation was not due to injuries. He stated that he had a successful training camp and was prepared to travel to the US. He explained that he visited the US Embassy in London, where his visa application was denied despite presenting all necessary paperwork.
The boxer expressed his disappointment, noting that becoming a three-time, two-weight world champion and fighting for a world title in America was a personal goal. He conveyed his regret for both himself and Abdullah Mason regarding the fight’s collapse.
The refusal of the visa prevented Cordina from participating in what he described as a chance to achieve a significant career milestone. The incident has left him feeling “absolutely gutted” about the missed opportunity to compete for a world title in the United States.
