Chelsea has engaged in initial discussions with Brighton regarding a potential transfer for striker Danny Welbeck. The 35-year-old forward has one year remaining on his current contract with Brighton.
Brighton is reportedly open to not hindering the striker’s move, provided they receive a suitable transfer fee. Welbeck’s potential arrival at Stamford Bridge could mark a shift in Chelsea’s transfer strategy, which has recently focused on acquiring younger talent.
Experience for the squad
Welbeck’s experience is seen as a valuable asset for Chelsea. He recorded his best Premier League goal tally last season, scoring 13 goals. In the campaign prior, he scored goals. His career statistics include 90 Premier League goals in 400 appearances.
The striker has played in all but one of Brighton’s 38 Premier League games last season. Since joining Brighton from Watford in 2020, he has scored 51 goals in 201 matches for the club.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso reportedly finds Welbeck appealing as both a player and a leader. While the situation is still in its early stages, there is optimism among all parties that a deal could be completed.
The interest in Welbeck follows Chelsea’s pursuit of other experienced players, such as Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka and free agent John Stones, earlier in the transfer window. This indicates a potential change in approach under Alonso’s management, moving towards players deemed more ready for the Premier League.
Welbeck’s potential transfer could also impact the futures of other Chelsea strikers, including Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap, and Marc Guiu. Emmanuel Emegha, who recently joined from Strasbourg, is also part of the squad.
Welbeck’s impact and Chelsea’s transfer activity
Welbeck’s playing style is characterised by his effectiveness in the penalty box. Among players who attempted 30 or more shots in the Premier League last season, he had a strong shot-to-goal conversion rate of 23 per cent. Additionally, 50 per cent of his shots were on target.
His ability to make off-the-ball runs and pose a shooting threat from outside the box are also noted. Welbeck is also effective in link-up play, particularly in quick pass-and-move sequences. If he were to join Chelsea, he would reunite with Joao Pedro, with whom he thrived at Brighton, and could create space for players like Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer.
Fabian Hurzeler, Brighton’s manager, previously praised Welbeck’s leadership qualities, stating that he is valuable both as a goal scorer and as a leader on and off the pitch.
Chelsea has been active in the transfer market this summer. They have already signed Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117 million, a record fee for a British player. Other arrivals include Geovany Quenda from Sporting for a fee, Marco Palestra from Atalanta for a fee, Denner from Corinthians for a fee, and Dastan Satpaev from Kairat Almaty for a fee. Emmanuel Emegha also joined from Strasbourg for an undisclosed fee.
Several players have also departed Chelsea. Marc Cucurella moved to Real Madrid for a fee, Andrey Santos joined Manchester United for a fee, Tyrique George transferred to Everton for a fee, and Jimmy-Jay Morgan moved to West Brom for a fee.
Chelsea has a history of signing players and staff from Brighton in recent seasons. This includes players such as Joao Pedro, Moises Caicedo, Marc Cucurella, and Robert Sanchez. Sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Sam Jewell are among the staff members who have moved from Brighton to Chelsea over the past four years.
Welbeck began his career at Manchester United before moving to Arsenal in 2014, and then spent a year at Watford before joining Brighton in 2020.
