England supporters optimistic for tournament progression

Following England’s victory over Mexico, supporters in Miami, Florida, have expressed confidence in the team’s ability to advance further in the World Cup. Many fans believe the win has built significant momentum for the Three Lions as they prepare to face Norway. Over 10,000 supporters from the UK are anticipated to arrive at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami for the upcoming match, contributing to a festive atmosphere already present across South Beach.

Fans were seen enjoying themselves at local bars on Friday evening, with Norway supporters also participating in activities on the oceanfront. The previous match against Mexico, which had a late 2 AM kick-off, led to a number of football-related incidents in the UK. The UK Football Policing Unit (UKFPU) recorded 42 football-related arrests and responded to 223 incidents across the country during the round of 16 game. This marked an increase from the 142 incidents reported during the earlier match against the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Chief Constable Mark Roberts noted that early indications suggest a significant number of calls to licensed premises were related to violence and disorder, which he attributed to extended licensing hours. However, on South Beach, England supporters remained focused on the team’s potential to end a long wait for major tournament success.

Fan expectations and key matchups

Dylan Kayek, a 22-year-old from Manchester now residing in Miami, shared his optimism, stating, “I’m very confident. Not too confident, but I feel good about us winning, definitely.” His sentiment was echoed by Josh Taylor, also 22, who added, “We’re on a good run, we’re building momentum into the tournament so hopefully we just keep it going.” Ruth Kayek, 48, simply expressed, “It’s coming home.” The Kayek family and Mr. Taylor secured their tickets shortly after England’s win against Mexico.

Dylan Kayek believes that England’s prominent players are performing when it matters most. He mentioned, “The big players are turning up. Bellingham, Kane – I hope they get it done tomorrow.” Mr. Taylor anticipates further celebrations, saying, “We’ll be here tomorrow night after England win and we’ll be going crazy.” Mrs. Kayek also indicated her willingness to travel to New York if England reaches the World Cup final.

Jack Williamson, 32, from Wiltshire, highlighted the importance of containing Haaland. He commented, “I reckon if we can keep Haaland quiet, we’ll be all right.” He predicted a 2-0 victory for England, while Josh Dolman, 34, from Swindon, foresaw a 3-1 win, suggesting Norway might score a late goal. Mr. Dolman booked his flights to Miami shortly after England’s victory over Mexico, stating he “couldn’t resist” coming to witness the team’s potential success.

Despite his optimism, Mr. Dolman acknowledged that England’s knockout stage matches are rarely straightforward, recalling the Mexico game where the team went 3-1 up before conceding and having a player sent off. He hopes for a more conventional victory, such as a 2-0, 3-0, or 3-1 scoreline. Mr. Williamson believes that a win against Norway could open the path to overall tournament success. Mr. Dolman also expressed confidence in Tommy Tuchel’s ability to guide the team through the tournament, even against strong opponents like France in a potential final.

Looking ahead to the semi-finals

Jayden Johal, 21, from outside London, also expects England to progress, although he anticipates a challenging match against Norway, possibly extending to extra time. His friend, Alex Gabbitas, 22, from north-west London, confirmed they had not yet made travel arrangements for a potential semi-final, but have accommodation in New York. England’s assistant manager, Anthony Barry, stated on Friday that the team needs to “take the handbrake off” and reach another level in their pursuit of a semi-final spot.

Sir David Beckham also met with England’s players before their quarter-final match against Norway, attending a training session in Fort Lauderdale and speaking with players in the gym. A victory against Norway would secure England a place in the semi-finals, where they would face either Argentina or Switzerland in Atlanta on Wednesday.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup matches are being held in Atlanta between June 15 and July 15, with eight matches scheduled at Atlanta Stadium, the FIFA-designated name for Mercedes-Benz Stadium during the tournament. These matches include Spain vs. Cape Verde on June 15, Czechia vs. South Africa on June 18, Spain vs. Saudi Arabia on June 21, Morocco vs. Haiti on June 24, Congo DR vs. Uzbekistan on June 27, England vs. Congo DR on July 1, and Argentina vs. Egypt on July 7, with one more match scheduled for July 15.
