Luca Van Assche of France claimed his inaugural ATP title on Sunday, defeating Belgium’s Alexander Blockx in the final of the Estoril Open in Portugal. The match concluded with a score of 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 in favour of Van Assche.
The championship encounter marked a significant moment as it was the first final contested between players born in 2004 or later. Van Assche, 22, demonstrated resilience on the clay surface, converting 8 of his 13 break point opportunities. Despite committing eight double faults, he secured the victory in a match that lasted two hours and 24 minutes.
Van Assche’s journey to the title in Estoril was challenging, as he played four three-set matches en route to lifting the trophy. He expressed pride in his performance throughout the week, acknowledging the difficulty and exhaustion of the matches. His win makes him the 10th first-time winner on the ATP Tour this year.
Blockx, 21, was competing in his first title match. He served seven aces but also had seven double faults. Blockx showed considerable determination, recovering from a 3-0 deficit in the third set to level the score at 5-5 before Van Assche ultimately closed out the match by winning the next two games. Blockx’s path to the final also involved four three-set matches, including saving two match points in the second round and staging comebacks in his semifinal match.
Road to the Final
Prior to the final, Van Assche faced fellow Frenchman Hugo Gaston in an all-French semifinal clash at ATP Estoril. Van Assche entered that match as the favourite, supported by his season-long form, a higher ATP ranking, and a 1-0 head-to-head record against Gaston. Their previous encounter was on clay in Marrakech just four months earlier, where Van Assche secured a two-set victory.
In their semifinal, Van Assche’s tactical advantage was evident from their past meeting. He had made 74% of his first serves and won 63% of those first-serve points, ultimately taking 54% of the total points. He also converted 5 of his 11 break point chances in that match. Gaston, despite losing their prior match in straight sets, had generated nine break point opportunities, converting two of them.
Van Assche’s route through the Estoril tournament included victories over Frederico Ferreira Silva, Pablo Carreno Busta, and Andrey Rublev, all of which were three-set matches. Gaston’s run to the semifinal involved wins against Damir Dzumhur, Titouan Droguet, and qualifier Tiago Pereira Torres.
