Lando Norris of McLaren secured pole position at the Formula One Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying session held at the Hungaroring in Mogyorod, near Budapest, on July 25, 2026. This achievement sets the stage for the upcoming race, where drivers will compete on the slow, twisty, and technical circuit.
The qualifying session saw several prominent drivers in action. Red Bull’s Dutch driver Max Verstappen participated, as did Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton of Britain and Charles Leclerc of Monaco. Mercedes’ Andrea Kimi Antonelli of Italy also drove during the session.
Mercedes’ Title Aspirations and Driver Dynamics

Despite this lead, Mercedes and Antonelli are aware they cannot afford to relax. Antonelli’s sixth win of the year, achieved from his sixth pole position in Belgium, solidified his position and highlighted his command over the new hybrid era’s AI-controlled engine and power management systems.
Antonelli’s teammate, George Russell, currently sits 50 points behind in third place. Russell has been working to refine his approach after an opening lap collision with former teammate Lewis Hamilton in Belgium, which led to his retirement from that race. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff offered support to Russell, emphasizing that the team would not shift its focus to a single driver in pursuit of the title.
Wolff stated that Mercedes has consistently demonstrated strong performance in every race but has not always converted that potential into results. He acknowledged that the team has lost points due to “self-inflicted issues” and stressed the need for improvement. Wolff also expressed a desire to avoid situations where drivers lose “time with each other,” aiming to prevent rivals like Ferrari or Red Bull from gaining an advantage.
He clarified that Mercedes would “never take a victory away” from either Antonelli or Russell, regardless of which driver was ahead. Wolff also addressed reports linking Ferrari with Antonelli, noting that Antonelli has been a Mercedes driver since he was 11 years old, suggesting that Ferrari should have pursued him earlier.
The Challenge at Hungaroring
The Hungaroring circuit is known for its challenging characteristics, which include slow speeds, numerous twists, and technical demands. Ferrari is anticipated to pose a significant threat at this venue. Lewis Hamilton will be aiming to equal his own record of nine wins at a single circuit, a feat he previously achieved at Silverstone.
Recent performances indicate that McLaren could also contend for a win, with Red Bull closely following. Max Verstappen, a four-time champion, secured a strong third-place finish in Belgium. While Antonelli and Hamilton are expected to be strong contenders for victory, the qualifying results suggest a competitive race ahead.
